Snorkeling at Sapona Shipwreck in Bimini Bahamas

Snorkeling at Sapona Shipwreck Bimini Bahamas!

Snorkeling at The Sapona Shipwreck Excursion

On this trip I opted to go Snorkeling at the Sapona shipwreck in Bimini Bahamas.  I purchased this excursion to snorkel at the shipwreck through Carnival Cruises.

This tour promised an array of fish and the possibility of seeing sea turtles, sting rays and maybe a shark or two.

Meeting Place for Excursion

For this excursion we met in front of Eagle beach which is located straight past the end of the Bimini cruise pier – basically straight across the island. You will be facing the water on the other side of the island.
Worst case scenario head towards Fisherman Village – this is where the excursion group is located.

We met our guide and walked from Eagle Beach to fisherman village. There we signed a waiver form – I guess if we got eaten by a shark or carried away by a sea turtle they were not liable.

Let’s Go Snorkel!

We boarded the boat, and took our 30 minute ride to the snorkel area. The staff fitted us for flippers, snorkel mask, and a life jacket.

Some of the guest were given a standard life vest. These have a few clip in straps and are easy to put on.

Others were given the kind of life jacket you had to inflate by pushing down on the mouth nozzle and blowing into the mouth piece. The self inflating vest are easy enough to do. To put on this type of  life jacket, you simply put it over your head, pull the strap that is on the back lower section between your legs – buckle and pull tight. Then the middle upper strap wraps from the back to the front – buckle and pull tight.

~Time to Jump In!

Ok so now the fun begins, once you get to the shipwreck – they tell you where you can snorkel and where not to snorkel based on the current and how rough the water is at the time.

Great place to Snorkel

The current had a good pull if you were near the end of the ship of or the front of the ship.  At the rear of the ship you have to be mindful of sections of the ship that are just barely covered over with water. It was easy to get banged into these areas with the force of the current and that the depth of the pieces were not very deep under the water.

First Time for Everything!

Within the first 10 minutes I caught a glimpse of a sea turtle. Since it is my first time snorkeling with a sea turtle I attempted to keep up with it. But it was definitely the faster and stronger swimmer. It swam right out of view of my camera.

Is There Plant Life at The Ship Wreck?

Yes, Alive and Well!

On the side of the ship you could see the growth of plant life. It was amazing seeing the side of this sunken vessel alive. The plants moved with the current, while the small fish took shelter inside the leaves of the plants.

You will be amazed to see how much plant material can live under water. This was a surprise to me.

Can You See Fish At The Ship Wreck?

Yes!

There were so many species of fish hanging at the shipwreck.  First, a large puffer fish just stood there as though he was on guard duty. His fins barely moved as I am being pushed and pulled by the current, his stature of just sitting still was truly remarkable.

Then small blue fish, followed by tiger striped fish, and then a large school of fish that sat deep into the shipwreck.

Time to Get Back on Board!

Just before getting back on board I was able to catch the passing by of a very large sting ray. It just skirted to the ocean floor and went on its way.

Would you Recommend Snorkeling at The Sunken Shipwreck?

Absolutely! This was a great adventure and I highly recommend this tour. Total tour was for 2 hours.

After the excursion was over there was still plenty of time to see the island, lay at the beach, or enjoy the local foods!

At least once in your lifetime you should try Snorkeling at The Sunken Shipwreck in Bimini Bahamas!
